Why Paper Yarn?

This project offers several exciting benefits:

  • Eco-Friendly: Upcycle waste paper and reduce your environmental impact.

  • Budget-Friendly: Create beautiful yarn without breaking the bank.

  • Unique Textures: Experiment with different paper types and techniques to achieve unique yarn textures.

  • Learning a Traditional Craft: Learn the art of hand-spinning and connect with ancient textile traditions.

Let's Make Paper Yarn!

  1. Prepare the Paper:

There are two ways you can prepare your paper before turning it into yarn. Let your personality or desired outcome decide which one you will choose.

  1. Cutting: Cut the paper into long, even strips. Experiment with different widths to see how they affect the yarn.

  2. Tearing: For a more rustic look, tear the paper into strips.

2. Create the Yarn:

This is where the fun begins! Grap your paper and drop spindle and let’s spin some yarn!

Basic Method: Tie the first strip to the drop spindle handle. Twist paper and feed through the hook at the top.

  • Roll strip tightly until a few inches remain.

  • Add another strip by spraying lightly with water and overlapping ends. Twist ends together and continue.

  • Maintain consistent tension for even thickness.

  • As your yarn gets longer, wrap around the drop spindle.

Troubleshooting:

  1. If the yarn is uneven, adjust your spinning.

  2. If the yarn breaks frequently, try adjusting the tension, using thicker strips, or using slightly thicker paper.
