Pop! Goes the Crochet: Mastering the Popcorn Stitch
The crochet world is a treasure trove of textures, and today, we're diving into one of the most delightfully bumpy ones: the popcorn stitch! This stitch creates a raised, rounded "pop" that adds a playful, three-dimensional element to your projects. Whether you're working on blankets, scarves, or even home decor, the popcorn stitch is sure to make your creations stand out.
What is the Popcorn Stitch?
Think of the popcorn stitch as a cluster of double crochets worked into the same stitch, then closed at the top to form a little "pop." It's a fantastic way to introduce texture and visual interest to your work. You can make them in different sizes! I will show you how to crochet a traditional popcorn and a “mini” version that pops out a bit less.
Let's Get Popping!
Before we dive into the written instructions, let's take a look at a visual demonstration. This video tutorial will walk you through the process step by step!
Written Instructions:
Here's a breakdown of how to create the popcorn stitch:
Abbreviations:
CH: Chain
DC: Double crochet
PC: Popcorn Stitch
SC: Single Crochet
ST(S): Stitch(es)
Instructions:
Traditional Popcorn Stitch
CH an even number of STS
Row 1:
SC in 2nd CH from hook & in CH across. You should have an odd number of STS.
Row 2:
SC 1 in the first ST
PC in the next ST
Here’s How to Work the Popcorn Stitch (PC)
STEP ONE: Work 5 DC into the same ST. (The number of DCs can vary depending on the desired "pop" size. Five DC is the most common number.) At this stage, it will look like a fan stitch or shell stitch. But we’re not finished!
Not Familiar with How to Work a DC? Let me explain!
Yarn over, insert hook into the indicated ST, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).
Yarn over, pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook).
Yarn over, pull through remaining loops on hook.
That’s it! Now repeat those steps four more times before moving on!
STEP TWO: Once you complete all 5 DC in the same ST, drop the loop from your hook. This loop is called the working loop. When you remove this loop from your hook, make sure it’s big enough so you don’t unravel your stitch.
Insert your hook from front to back into the first DC of the 5 DC you made. Put the working loop back on your hook, and make sure you tighten it up. Pull the working loop through the first DC to close it and complete the stitch!
The popcorn stitch will look like a little cup.
SC 1 in next ST
Keep repeating that sequence: PC in next ST, SC 1 in next ST, all the way across the row. Make sure you finish the row with a SC!
SC 1 to finish the row
CH 1 & turn
Row 3:
SC across
You will work each SC of Row 3 in each SC and in the top of each PC. You will have the same number of stitches at the end of each row.
REP Rows 2 & 3 to your desired size
Mini popcorn stitch
Repeat the instructions above, but only use 3 DC for each popcorn stitch
Tips and Tricks:
Tension: Keep your tension consistent to ensure even and well-defined popcorns.
Pop Size: Adjust the number of double crochets to create larger or smaller popcorns.
Placement: Experiment with different stitch placements to create various textured patterns.
Practice: Like any crochet technique, the popcorn stitch takes practice. Don't be discouraged if your first few attempts aren't perfect.
Yarn choice: Thicker yarns will make the popcorns more pronounced.
Ideas for Using the Popcorn Stitch:
Blankets: Add a cozy, textured border or create an all-over popcorn pattern.
Pillows: Create decorative pillows with eye-catching textures.
Washcloths or dishcloths: The texture can be very useful for scrubbing.
